Apple Doubles Profit And Swipes At Microsoft

Apple has announced $11.6bn profit for the first three months of this year - nearly double the figures for the same period last year.

The results are better than analysts predicted.

In raw figures, Q1 for Apple saw $39.2bn revenue on sales of 35.1m iPhones and 11.8m iPads. All these figures are about double Q1 last year.

The figures show a drop from Q4 last year, but that is expected because of Christmas buying and the launch of the hugely successful iPhone 4S. It's still Apple's second best quarter ever.

During a conference all after the figures were announced, CEO Tim Cook was asked about the (fairly) imminent launch of Microsoft Windows 8, which will bring together an OS for desktops, laptops, tablets and (sort of) smartphones:
"You can converge a toaster and a fridge, but those things are probably not going to be pleasing to the user".
