Windows Phone app downloads double in 60 days

Here's another pointer that Microsoft might at last be onto a winner with its Windows Phone OS.

Senior Director of the Windows Phone Apps Team, Todd Brix, has told TheNextWeb that app downloads and developer revenue have both doubled in the past 60 days.

We're presuming this is because of sales of new Windows Phone 8 handsets, which appear to be selling well. Nokia has revealed that its range of Lumia WP8 devices are selling faster than expected.

It comes as Microsoft has launched a competition for app developers called Windows Phone Next App Star.

The top prize is the winning app featuring in a WP prime-time ad on US TV.

According to Microsoft:
This isn’t just about picking the most popular app in the Store. Windows Phone Next App Star is about giving developers a shot at being the next big hit. You don’t have to be a longtime developer on the Windows Phone platform — even a newcomer can win fans and win big.
