Nokia warned it would do it. Now it's done it.
Its Navifirm software is now locked down. You have to enter a Nokia online log-in to use it and that basically means Nokia employees and employees of manufacturing partners.
Navifirm is software that connects to Nokia's repository of firmware for its mobile phones. A new firmware update usually appears there before it's released to handset owners as an official update.
It gave enthusiasts the chance to flash their phones with the latest firmware...or go back to an old firmware.
But not any more. Nokia servers are now demanding log-in info before letting Navifirm connect.
