Windows Phone "snatches 3rd place from BlackBerry in Global smartphone shipping"

Windows Phone has overtaken BlackBerry for third place in worldwide smartphone OS shipments, according to the latest figures from analysts International Data Corporation.

It's something of a milestone for Microsoft's new kid on the block, which was launched less than three years ago.

The figures show Q1 2013 shipments for WP rose to 3.2% market share - up more than 133% - while BlackBerry dropped to 2.9%.

But still dominating the market is Google's Android with a massive 75% share of the market, followed by Apple's iOS on 17.3%. Interestingly, that's a drop of more than five percentage points for Apple from the same quarter the year before. iOS is seen as badly needing a revamp to keep its figures up.
Windows Phone posted the largest year-over-year gain among the leading operating systems, more than doubling its size from a year ago. Nokia was largely responsible for driving these volumes higher, accounting for 79.0% of all Windows Phone shipments during the quarter. Since Nokia began shipping Windows Phone devices, the company has shipped a total of 20.3 million units and grown the footprint worldwide to include address multiple market segments. Meanwhile, other vendors continue to offer Windows Phone devices, but mainly as an alternative to their signature Android devices. Still, the gains made by Windows Phone demonstrate both end-user demand and OEM support.
It must be remembered that these figures are for units shipped, not units sold. And if stocks are building up in warehouses, that can make a big difference.
