Microsoft paves the way for Android and iOS apps on Windows phones

It's been rumoured for some time and now Microsoft has confirmed it's to make it easy for developers to convert Android apps to run on Windows phones.

It means Android apps can be prepared to run on Windows 10 for Phone, when it's released later this year, with minimal modification.

Windows phones are stuck at a tiny 3% of the global smartphone market. Rival Android has more than 80% with Apple's iOS taking up the slack.

Because of this, app developers are still concentrating on Google and Apple's offerings.

Microsoft see its new friendliness towards Android as a way of attracting the big players to Windows.

It's thought it's also working on a way to make iOS apps work on Windows as well.

Update: Microsoft has now confirmed it will also be making it easier for iOS developers to make their apps work on Windows 10.
